Professor Vlatka Hlupic voted one of the Most Influential International HR Thinkers 2015 – Press Release

London, 22 September 2015

Professor Vlatka Hlupic has been voted one of the HR Most Influential International Thinkers 2015. The prestigious top 30 list was compiled by HR Magazine and announced during a ceremony at Claridges in London on 21 September 2015. Awards were based on nominations from readers for the work that had inspired and had the most impact on how they approach their role; an expert panel comprising 50 members then judged the nominated candidates according to personal influence, practical relevance, visibility, originality, and influence during the past year.

Vlatka is Professor of Business and Management at Westminster University, CEO of The Management Shift Ltd, Founder and CEO of the Drucker Society London and author of “The  Management Shift: How to Harness the Power of People and Transform Your Organization for Sustainable Success”, an award-winning best-seller and one of Forbes’ top eight business books 2014.

Her book advocates a new way of thinking and working to meet the needs of today’s technology-driven, knowledge-based businesses. It combines theory and practice in demonstrating how companies can make changes in their leadership styles to improve employee engagement, remove barriers to innovation and uncover the hidden strengths in people and their organisations.

Vlatka is also a renowned professional keynote and TEDx speaker and has appeared on 20 public platforms in 2014/15. She has published over 160 articles in journals, business publications, books and conference proceedings, and has won several awards for her contributions.  She is also an associate editor, guest editor and a member of editorial boards for a number of international journals, and her expert comments have appeared in many business publications and newspapers.

Commenting on the award, she said: “It’s very rewarding to have my work recognised in this way. I feel extremely proud to be part of this prestigious HR community of thinkers.

“Helping individuals, companies and society create happier, more purposeful and successful workplaces is my passion – it’s my life purpose. It gives me drive, energy and motivation, and it’s hugely satisfying to see the practical impact of my ideas.”

She added:   “What I have seen in many companies are over-controlling management styles and systems that employees find stifling and demotivating.  Companies need a better understanding of human psychology and motivation.  I call it humanising management – treating people with respect, and distributing power and decision-making. The results, in terms of performance and success, can be astonishing. It’s why I wrote my book.”

Vlatka is currently undertaking research into the mindsets and leadership styles of 50 CEOs in some of the world’s most successful companies.  The results will appear in a new book, providing further practical lessons for other organisations to make the shift towards enlightened leadership.

She has also started work on the launch of a global petition for humanising management, supported by many leading management thinkers and professional associations.

Intellectual fireworks on Guy Fawkes night

Intellectual fireworks on Guy Fawkes night

So, it seems I did manage to create some intellectual fireworks in Parliament on Guy Fawkes Day. It was a huge privilege and honour to have the opportunity to share “The Management Shift” ideas in front of the over-subscribed audience in the Grand Committee Room at the House of Commons on 5th November. The event was hosted by Rehman Chishti MP, Member of Parliament for Gillingham and Rainham. (more…)

Why I Wrote “The Management Shift”

The research, the philosophy and the approach described in The Management Shift represent a life’s work. Over the years, I have become convinced that this radically different ideology of management can even make this world a better place – hence my passion to communicate the ideas. As I developed the 5 Level Emergent Leadership Model (described in Chapter 4) and used the knowledge behind it to help many C-Level executives to achieve an individual shift, I realised that helping one person at the time was not good enough and not fast enough for me. The Future of Management is Here: an Unstoppable Metamorphosis to a Butterfly

(an excerpt from Chapter 7 of “The Management Shift” book)

The future of management is already here. ‘The Management Shift’ is already happening for many individuals and organisations. As Gary Hamel wrote in his landmark article in Harvard Business Review ‘Moon Shots for Management'(1): ‘Equipping organizations to tackle the future would require a management revolution no less momentous than the one that spawned modern industry.’ Similarly, in his interview for the Forbes Magazine, Don Tapscott said that we are ‘at a punctuation point in human history where the industrial age and institutions have finally come to their logical conclusion’(2). Excerpt from “The Management Shift” Preface

In business management, there is a problem. There is also an historic opportunity. The problem is that our conventional hierarchical approach, with a senior management operating ‘command and control’, is no longer a credible option for a rapidly changing, unpredictable, global business environment. The opportunity comes from the wealth of evidence and thinking behind an enlightened alternative. In this book I shall describe what I call ‘The Management Shift’, that focuses on people, their collaboration and sense of purpose. (more…)
